Sentinel Above the Door - Railroad Spike Protection Talisman

For generations people have marked their thresholds with small protections. Iron driven into doorframes, cedar hung beside entryways, charms fastened where the outside world meets the safety of home. Sentinel Above the Door is crafted like those old folk safeguards - a watchman for the threshold, meant to stand between what belongs within and what should remain outside.

Each piece is made from an iron railroad spike, ritually cleansed and blessed before being bound in red cedar that I harvested near the train track. Long associated with protection, blessing, purification, and keeping of boundaries, cedar has been carried, burned, and hung in homes across countless traditions. Paired with iron (a material long favored in folk practice for its protective qualities), the result is a simple but enduring symbol of guardianship.
